Influencer Inspiration | Mia Kang x TedHK
Mia had a difficult childhood, she was overweight and bullied. At age 13 she developed eating disorders and almost halved her weight. She was immediately scouted as a model and for over 15 years has lived with the pressures of the industry battling eating, psychological and body dysmorphic disorders. Since she can remember her body has been criticized on an almost daily basis.
In 2016 she was at the top or her career and from the outside looked like she was living the dream. The reality was she was miserable, sick, depressed and riddled with insecurities. Increasing demands from the industry to be skinnier, coupled with the ghosting of a f*ckboy caused Mia to snap and embark on a 10-day vacation to Thailand. There she fell in love with Muay Thai and moved into a training camp. 10 days turned into 9 months, and she became a fighter in more ways than one.
Fighting is now a way of life for Mia. Martial arts brought her physical, emotional and spiritual happiness. For the first time in 27 years, she looked in the mirror and actually liked what she saw. Fighting taught her self-confidence, to let go of her insecurities and to love herself. Stop trying to fit into a box and to be unapologetically yourself. What is truly important is the woman that you are, not the skin you are in.
She has taken a stand for what she believes in and is fighting to be the change she wants to see in the fashion and entertainment industry so that the next generation of women don’t have to live with the same pressures.
It is her mission to share this journey and empower other women through her initiative Killa Girl Gang, a community of strong, badass women who empower one another and who are there for one another.
